Abstract

We present VARIANT (VAriable Resolution Interactive ANalysis of Terrain), a system forprocessing and visualizing terrains represented through Triangulated Irregular Networks (TINs)
at multiple resolutions. Multiresolution refers to the possibility of dynamically varying the
density of the TIN, and is used to enhance speed of computation while guaranteeing the accuracy
needed by operations. VARIANT directly supports basic queries as well as some high-level
operations, and it can be enriched with many other functionalities. It is built on the Multi-
Triangulation (MT) Library, an extensible library for multiresolution geometric modeling.
