Abstract | As the volume of multimedia content available on the Web continues to increase, there is a clearneed for more advanced techniques for effective retrieval and management of such data. In this
context, we see a growing interest in exploiting the potential of the Semantic Web in different
research fields. But, on the other hand, there is a general lack of tools able to analyse, organize and
understand digital shape models (especially 3D models) for easily populating repositories with
complete and well-detailed metadata. Several steps are necessary to create and associate semantics
with a shape and some of them are clearly context-dependent.
In this paper, we present the design details of our new system, that we call be-SMART, for
inspecting digital 3D shapes by extracting geometrical and topological information from them and
for structuring and annotating these shapes using ontology-driven metadata. In particular, we
describe the general structure of the system, the different modules and their mutual relations. We
then concentrate on the first two modules of the system showing how the 3D models are annotated
following ontology-driven metadata. We also provide motivations for further work in developing
new techniques for both annotating and managing 3D models on the Web.
