Nail Gumerov
Nail Gumerov was a senior research scientist in UMIACS for almost 20 years. He died in January 2022.
His research interests were broad and include scientific computing and algorithms related to applied mathematics, fluid mechanics, acoustics, electromagnetism, plasma physics, nanoscience, and more. Gumerov was particularly interested in fast multipole methods (FMM) and their applications, for which he developed a course taught for several years to students studying computer science, mathematics, mechanical and electrical engineering. His research interests also included programming of graphics processors, use of heterogeneous architectures, and scalable algorithms for supercomputing.
Gumerov has written more than 160 research publications, including a large monograph on the FMM (co-authored with UMIACS faculty member Ramani Duraiswami and published by Elsevier, Oxford, UK, 2005), and more than 40 papers in scientific archival journals on applied mathematics, fluid mechanics, computational physics, numerical methods, and algorithms.
He served as an associate editor for the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. Gumerov has also collaborated with the Bashkir State University in Russia (the Center for Micro- and Nanoscale Dynamics of Dispersed Systems) as a scientific advisor and professor-consultant.
Gumerov has authored and co-authored several efficient algorithm implementations, software, and inventions, and as a co-author he was a finalist for the university's Invention of the Year awards in information technology in 2002 and 2005, and winner of the award in 2008.
He received his doctorate from the Lomonosov Moscow State University in fluid mechanics in 1987. He also received his Sc.D. degree in physics and mathematics from Tyumen State University in 1992, which is the highest scientific degree in the former USSR and Russia. Gumerov has resided and worked in the U.S. since 1993.
